Osteopathic Manual Practitioner

BIO

Doug is a classically trained osteopathic manual practitioner as a graduate of the Canadian Academy of Osteopathy (CAO) with a Masters in Practice of Osteopathic Manipulative Sciences (MOMSc.).

Prior to pursuing an education in Osteopathy, Doug had a career of nearly 30 years in robotics and automation engineering, industrial mechanics, mechanical engineering, and electrical systems which took him around the world, several times. Although this education and experience would at first seem to be a total 180 degrees from Osteopathy, nothing could be further from the truth. Dr. Andrew T. Still, the father of Osteopathy, often referred to the importance of acting and thinking like a mechanic and engineer when regarding the systems of the body, which Doug demonstrates naturally.

Doug’s path to Osteopathy was the result of long-standing injuries from being a competitive hockey player in his teenage years. Chronic hip and shoulder injuries were a constant reminder of those younger days and he regularly sought treatment from other manual therapies with limited effect in effort to keep the surgeon away. Following a referral to see an Osteopathic Manual Practitioner, Doug’s chronic hip pain disappeared in a few visits. This was a revelation and Doug quickly read three books written by Dr. Still exclaiming, “Oh I totally get this!”. He returned to school once again to help others become free from the type of pain he suffered with for decades.

While attending the CAO, Doug was often called upon and sought out by his fellow students to explain the mechanical principles being used to adjust the body systems. It is this deep integration of the two sciences that makes Doug so effective in applying Osteopathic Manipulation and in understanding of how the body systems are inter-related. As a lifelong learner, Doug continues to develop new knowledge through extensive reading of classical osteopathy texts and new anatomical reviews, always through the discerning eye of the now human engineer and mechanic.
